Red Panda—Teriyaki Bowls

Branding, Stationery & Illustration

The Challenge

Japanese and Mexican food are delicious by themselves. But fusing them allows for unique experiences and a true delight to your taste buds. Just as an artist in a theater, Red Panda focuses on delighting its audience. The restaurant is the stage and dishes are the performance pieces—crafted with great passion and enthusiasm.

The Approach

When Red Panda contacted me looking to revolutionize their brand, I dove into Japanese culture and started reading about traditional Kabuki theater. In Japanese culture Kabuki face painting is used to highlight the emotions of each character. The Red Panda symbol remembers the joy and slyness of Mexican food, as well as the tradition and folklore of Japanese food.

A set of illustrations were made for this branding project. To find the perfect icon, we worked on many iterations of the panda until we landed on the most aesthetic and balanced version.

In the end, we were all very happy with the result; specially Red Panda’s customers who were very excited to comment on social media.

Engagement has improved drastically ever since the restaurant had it’s brand designed.

Brand Identity

Even though a red panda is the only living species of the genus Ailurus and the family Ailuridae—and is obviously not just an actual panda bear painted red—we decided we could take the liberty to mix the concept of Kabuki theater’s makeup with a panda bear to make a more unique and fun logo.

Stationery Design

In addition to creating a new logo for Red Panda, I was tasked with designing their packaging, menus, napkins and other typical restaurant paraphernalia as well as corporate stationery items.

To improve the brand’s recall even further, we used a set of distinctively oriental-inspired fonts that complimented Red Panda’s bold identity.

Jo's Notes

The project was a constant game of balance. Balance between Japanese and Mexican; between extravagant and conventional; between simple and complex.

Once I did my research into Kabuki theater, we all fell in love with the concept and with the possibility it presents to make a bond with the audience.
